THE PHILIPPINE CRIME STORY: THE CRIME NARRATIVE CONVERGENCE OF TV PATROL AND FPJ’S ANG PROBINSYANO

Abstract: Devesa, B.P. (2017). The Philippine Crime Story: The Crime Narrative Convergence of TV Patrol and FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, Unpublished Bachelor’s Thesis, University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication.

This study examines how the discourse of crime in the Philippines flow from today’s news stories in TV Patrol to the daily episodes of the television drama Ang Probinsyano in relation to the realities present in the first few months of office of President Rodrigo Duterte. This study aims to identify and explain the parallelism between the content and the treatment of crime stories in both news and entertainment media. As both news and fiction produce stories and narratives, identification of news and entertainment values and the process of representation is the key in understanding the prominence and reinforcement of certain images of crime. Dominant perspectives and representations of crime influence the depiction of crime and crime-related activities in both news and entertainment programs. Access to communicative events and discourses allow certain dominant images of crime to be reproduced and repackaged for different genres thus reinforcing them as the social reality of crime for the Filipino audience. Through the analysis of the episodes of TV Patrol and Ang Probinsyano from September to November 2016, the presentation and representation of crime-related news stories and narratives, understanding the social realities of crime and the control over its discourse is the main objective of this study. Mediated realities of crime converge with social realities and experiences. Crime narratives are packaged and repackaged in news and in Ang Probinsyano contribute to the salience and legitimization of the discourses surrounding the crime reality in Philippine society.
