It's Gay-Okay
Aguinaldo, M.A.L. (2016). It’s Gay-Okay: A Study on the Reception of Male Filipino Millennials on the SCOTUS Same-sex Marriage Declaration and Their Expression on Facebook. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
The United States of America legalized same-sex marriage in all of its states in June 2015, and many supporters around the world celebrated with the country’s citizens. In a generation that claims to be steadfast in its protection and acceptance of different communities like the LGBTQIA, does this manifest in the online discourse of Filipino groups and individuals regarding this event?
This research studied how selected male Filipino millennials received the SCOTUS declaration and expressed their opinions in their social networking site accounts, particularly Facebook. Their sentiments were investigated through in-depth interviews. Using Critical Discourse Analysis and drawing from Generational Analysis, this study aimed to show how the male Filipino youth are continuously influenced both by their generational traits as millennials and religiosity in terms of their same-sex marriage declaration reception on Facebook.
