The president is the main architect of Philippine foreign policy. Changes in presidential regimes thus typically result changes in foreign policy, which then get reported by international news media. Along these lines, this thesis compares reportage about the Philippines before and after the inauguration of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration on June 30, 2016. Specifically, it looks into the country’s portrayal during this period regarding foreign policy issues such as national defense, foreign investments and groups related to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). It also looks at how the coverage differs across countries with limited and liberalized press models. Informed by the Agenda Setting Theory and the Framing Theory, this content analysis covered a total of 652 online news articles. Articles were measured using the concepts of prominence, treatment, tone, standard, and frames. Findings indicated that articles published after the inauguration of the Duterte administration were treated more positively and more prominently compared to those from the earlier time period. Articles usually had frames on Crime and Safety and Foreign Relations in either time period, but it could be observed that the Security and Defense frame became more noticeable in articles published after the inauguration of the Duterte administration.
