The University of the Philippines Sidlangan is a duly-recognized organized organization of the Biliranon, Leyteño, and Samareño students of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. It is committed towards the promotion of the highest degree of competence and excellence among its members by providing them channels for individual growth through their active involvement in various academic and socio-civic activities held not only in Metro Manila but in the Eastern Visayas Region as well.
General Information
- Established on February 16, 1976, UP Sidlangan serves as the home away from home for UP Diliman students from Eastern Visayas. Since then, the organization has produced alumni who were to become the prime movers of the region.
- UP Sidlangan has also been expanding its network as it actively participates in the Generation Peace, a peace-advocate movement among youth organizations nation-wide. It has also been an active member of the UP Sanlahi Alliance, the umbrella organization of provincial, regional and ethno-linguistic organizations in UP Diliman. For the past two years, UP Sidlangan has been awarded as the 'Best Org' among the sixteen member organizations of the UP Sanlahi.
- Currently, UP Sidlangan has 46 resident members--one of the biggest among regional organizations in UP Diliman. The organization continues to offer holistic development among its members by exposing them to various events and activities while being of service to the home region.

Principles
- 1) We believe that the students are part of the society and should channel their efforts to socially and culturally relevant endeavors.
- 2) We believe in the promotion of academic freedom and the protection of student’s rights and welfare as requirements for a genuine academic and student life.
- 3) We believe that the organization can contribute to the development of the members, both as individuals and as a group.
- 4) We believe in the concept of “home away from home” and that the organization will serve as such to its members.
- 5) We believe that we can contribute to the development of Biliran, Leyte, and Samar.
Objectives
- 1) To unite and organize the UP Diliman students from Region VIII for the attainment of their common interest.
- 2) To encourage activities and endeavors toward social, cultural, and intellectual development among its members.
- 3) To foster greater mutual understanding, unity and cooperation between the members and other students.
- 4) To instill national consciousness among its members in order to continue in the assertion of the Filipino people’s rights and well-beings.
- 5) To render service to the Eastern Visayas region in whichever way the organization can provide.

Projects & Activities
Eastern Visayas Day
- EV Day is an annual event of the organization to introduce the organization to students from Region 8. Filled with games and fun, this event is held to unite and foster camaraderie among students from Eastern Visayas.
Lecture Series and Workshops
- Imparting knowledge to members is one of the organization’s aims. These lecture series and workshops inform members and increase their awareness regarding issues, concerns, and other information that may be helpful in each one’s growth.
Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE)
- The organization raises awareness regarding given issues that people should be mindful of. Through ACLE, UP Sidlangan exercises its opportunity to share and to inform students about concerns that is not bounded by the four walls of the classroom.
Outreach Program
- An annual tradition of sharing to the less fortunate people is a little way of the organization to see smiles on their faces. It is UP Sidlangan’s turn to share what was received from people who supported.
Anniversary Week
- As an organization representing the region to the UP community, series of events are held for a week to showcase the culture and beauty of Easter Visayas. UP Sidlangan will still be proudly standing and thriving for excellence on its 37th year in 2013.
Line Up of Events
Parumbaay:
It is a contest open for all students in the university that promotes the region through the activities prepared by the members.
Cultural Exhibit:
An exhibit is held in designated areas where the beauty and culture of the region is showcased.
Open Tambayan:
In this event, the members welcome everyone to the tambayan as free food is served. This serves as thanksgiving event of the organization.
Anniversary Dinner:
The week finishes off with the gathering of the members and alumni of the organization to celebrate for another successful year and to give credits to outstanding members and alumni.
Pakaritay
- Pakaritay is an annual academic event designed to raise the academic performance and competence of the different elementary and high schools of the region.
Line Up of Events
Grade School and High School Quiz Show:
The event opens with Pakaritay Elementary and High School Quiz Show, a showcase between competing minds of the region’s best students in elementary and high school as they hurdle through a series of questions in Math, General Science and in the Humanities. Basic knowledge, as well as current issues, will be tackled to increase the awareness of the young generation.
Extemporaneous Speaking:
On its 14th year, the Annual Pakaritay Extemporaneous Speaking Contest will once again set the standard for public speaking as we hear the young people speak out their views and opinions about significant issues concerning our generation. Through this, they will be able to relay insights to their fellow students and some respectable people from the academe.
Essay Writing:
Pakaritay Essay Writing Contest immortalizes creative ideas from fresh young minds as they express themselves through ink and pen. We believe that written compositions can go beyond our voices’ reach and can even inspire more people.
Poem Writing:
This year, we will take a glimpse of the youth’s rhymes and lyrics as the Pakaritay holds its first poem writing contest. Thoughts running through their ingenious minds will be scripted down in the most creative way they can through poetry.
Feature Writing:
UP Sidlangan will hold another first in its existence. Feature writing that focuses on the region will be held for the high school students to share anything under the sun regarding the given topic. Another battle of the pens will measure the awareness of the students about their region.
Career Exhibit:
Career exhibit inspires participants of the Pakaritay 2012 as they aspire for future courses in the premier university of the country, the University of the Philippines. An overview of courses offered in UP will be exhibited with a purpose of helping them choose which to take and gave them a preview about university life and what to expect as a UP student. Furthermore, it also aims to encourage high school students to dream big and take courses that are vital in enlightening and empowering our region’s development.
