ABSTRACT

Rosales, G. (2019). PA-XP NAMAN!: An Exploratory Study on the ABS-CBN Studio Experience Theme and Amusement Park, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

This research seeks to understand the transmedia experience inside a theme park setting. More specifically, it examines how worldbuilding takes place in the ABS-CBN Studio Experience Theme Park. This study follows the stories of Studio City-goers and analyzes their insights and impressions about the world created of local television shows. Utilizing the methods of Participant Observation and Face-to-Face Interviews for data gathering, I unravel the key characteristics of the art of world-building specific to this experience.

For my analysis, there are six themes that emerge from the Studio City experience: acknowledgement of the production process, reference to television and traditional media practices, reference to technology and other theme parks, immersive experiences as a form of storytelling, consciousness and consequence of one’s action, and finally, a sense of belongingness and excitement. I realize that there is the presence of mental models of the world other than the physical space but at the same time, theme park itineraries are of equal importance to aid in the visitor’s synergistic and seamless experience. Findings reveal that the theme park is a storytelling and sensory experience of its own. The study understands how television and emerging media may interplay and be part of the lives of Filipino audiences in the world of digitization of media experiences.

ABSTRAKT

Ang pananaliksik na ito ay nagbibigay linaw sa pagpapalaganap ng transmedia experience sa mga theme park. Partikular na sinusuri nito kung paano naisasabuhay ang worldbuilding sa ABS-CBN Studio Experience Theme and Amusement Park. Gamit ang Participant Obsevation at Face-to-Face interviews, inilalarawan ang iba’t ibang kwentong karanasan.

Sa aking pag-aaral, nahanap ko ang anim na tema at katangian na matutunghayan sa Studio City: pagkilala sa proseso ng produksyon, pagtukoy sa telebisyon at tradisyunal na midya, pagtukoy sa teknolohiya at iba pang theme parks, isang uri ng pagkwento ang mga immersive experiences, pagkamalay at resulta ng partisipasyon, at pagiging parte ng pisikal na mundo ng midya. Sa tesis na ito nakita na may pangkaisipan at pisikal na representasyon ang theme parks. Natutunan din na mahalaga ang mga mapa upang maipabilang ang tao sa mundo upang ang karanasan ay maging synergistic at sensory. Sa tesis na ito, nakikita ang epekto ng kolaborasyon ng telebisyon at bagong midya at teknolohiya sa pagiging parte ng buhay ng Pilipino.
