LOVE IN THE TIME OF HEGEMONY: A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS ON ABS-CBN'S MY GIRL

ABSTRACT

The False Reality of Love

Viewing the world from a Marxist perspective, we see a class-divided society based on economic circumstances. As television presents a reality that is devoid of related issues such as oppression and inequality, the masses tend to perceive this said reality as one that mirrors their actual experiences. In the romance mode of story-telling, we see that love can cross boundaries and divisions, and it is a concept that we rarely find in a world where classes are at constant hostility with each other.

Using a grounded theory approach on textual analysis, narrative elements in the soap opera My Girl shall be examined to determine how the concepts of love and romantic relationships are portrayed in soap operas. A primary objective of this research is to investigate romance in the said soap opera acts as a tool, which tends to misrepresent actual reality.

As this paper seeks to tackle disparity of the world created in soap operas to the actual reality most people live, it also aims to prove how the soap opera functions as a control mechanism to maintain social order today.
