Paz, M. T. (2018). Higit pa sa Parol at Puto Bumbong: The Culture of Poverty in ABS-CBN’s Christmas Station IDs. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines, College of Mass Communication.

ABSTRACT

This research critiques the existence of a “culture of poverty” in the Filipino community by investigating the myths of Philippine poverty, which may be extracted through an analysis of the representations of Filipino Christmas mediated by ABS-CBN’s Christmas Station IDs from 2002 to 2017. The study aims to contribute to the discourse on the “culture of poverty” (Lewis, 1966) by applying the theory to a study of a media text through the guidance of semiotic analysis and Roland Barthes’ concept of myth-making.

Through semiotic analysis, I have determined ABS-CBN’s narrative of a Filipino Christmas by breaking down the signifier from the signified and figuring out the significations found in each Station ID. By determining the significations which have been consistent from one Station ID to another, the analysis shows that the Filipino Christmas had been defined by the Station IDs as a festivity centered on the concepts of Filipino love, family, and charity. Going through the mythical level of the analysis, I problematized the myths of love, family and a world-class Christmas propagated by the Filipino Christmas as an institution masking a “culture of poverty” behind its colorful façade by formulating the counter-myths through critical textual analysis.

Keywords: Culture of poverty, Filipino Christmas, myth-making, semiotic analysis
