Creating the Political Spectacle: A Textual Analysis of Political News in TV Patrol World
ABSTRACT
This study examines how political news is created. It believes that political news presented in mainstream media tends to focus on appeal. When this happens, political news become superficial and is reduced to mere political spectacles. The study further explores the creation of political news. It examines the role of both the media and political actors in the creation of political spectacles.
The focus on the coverage of political leaders involved in the hostage-taking incident on August 23, 2010 at the Quirino Grandstand, by TV Patrol World was analyzed. A textual analysis using the framework of Capella and Jamieson was made use of, which determines if a news report used an issue-based approach of news coverage (wherein the focus was on the political issue or problem) or if it used a strategic-based approach in news coverage (wherein appeal is highlighted instead through the focus on story, characters, conflict, competition, and audience.)
