The influence of using Social Networking Sites at work on Filipino employees’ productivity and interpersonal relationships

ABSTRACT

This study explores how accessing Social Networking Sites (SNS) influence work behavior and work productivity. Literature has shown that using SNS and other forms of social media while at the workplace affected work productivity. The researchers wished to find out the reasons why it is accessed while at work and what positive effects it brings in the work setting. Thus, a series of focus interviews on employees and HR personnel were done. An online survey was also conducted to further strengthen the qualitative data. Findings show that accessing such sites during working hours helped employee respondents and informants get diversion and relief from the stress they experience in work. It also allowed them to stay connected and updated with their social network even during working hours. For some employees, the use of accessing SNS at the workplace also helped in the accomplishment of their work-related tasks as it allows for real-time communication with co-workers and also serves as a venue for information-seeking. Even so, HR personnel maintain conservative views on SNS use during work hours. On a positive note, SNS helped in facilitating a more comfortable face-to-face communication between an employee respondents/informant and her/his work colleagues.
