The world’s water resources are facing the ever-growing threats and challenges posed by population increase, rapid urbanization and adverse land-use shifts, pollution of waterways and aquifers, weather uncertainties, climate change and the increasing competition among various users of water. The important tasks that are assigned to engineers, scientists, planners and decision makers for the provision of water infrastructure and services are multifarious , including the assessment of the water resources in the hydrologic cycle, the quantification of the water-related needs and corresponding threats or risks, and the identification and formulation of appropriate responses to these threats and needs. To be able to do these tasks, the professionals have to be equipped with the fundamentals of hydrology and hydraulics.

These subjects are prerequisites to the understanding of the hydrological and hydraulic processes and phenomena, as well as in developing design tools to determine solutions to water resources needs and problems.


Module 4: Modeling of Water Resources Systems (October 27, 28, 29; 8AM to 5PM) Prerequisite Courses: Modules 1, 2 & 3

Course Objectives: • To acquire an understanding of the formulation and application of mathematical models for surface water and groundwater flow • To be able to use these models in several cases of water resources planning and management problems

Course Outline 1. Introduction (1 h lecture) 2. Watershed Hydrology Modeling (3 h lecture) 3. Computer Workshop with HEC-I (4 h workshop) 4. River Hydraulic Modeling with UNET (4 h lecture) 5. Computer Workshop with UNET (4 h workshop) 6. Groundwater Flow Modeling MODFLOW (4 h lecture) 7. Computer Workshop with MODFLOW (4 h workshop)


TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Scientists, engineers and technologists interested and/or involved in water resources analysis, infrastructure design, evaluation and planning


TRAINING METHODOLOGY

Lectures, demonstrations, computer-aided calculations, simulations and laboratory exercises will be used in the training course.
