Abstract: Belenzo, R., & Valmoria, K. (2017). A Comparison of the Uses and Effects of Facebook Live by Rappler, Philippine Daily Inquirer and ABS-CBN News, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication
Despite its growing fame, Facebook did not content itself with the features it had. It began to evolve and expand in order to cater to the growing needs of its users. In August 2015, the social media site launched Facebook Live, its own live-streaming application which allowed users to broadcast in real time.
Facebook Live has been a hit both abroad and locally. Even news organizations in the Philippines have resorted to using the live streaming application to broadcast their own content.
In response to the feature’s rising popularity, this paper explored the use of Facebook Live by Rappler, ABS-CBN News , and the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The study looked into the motivation behind the specified media outlets’ use of the application. Aside from this, the paper also determined what changes occurred inside the newsroom when Facebook Live was introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of the application were also evaluated, as well as its effects on the organization’s original medium.
The research studied the production process, as well as the content of Facebook Live videos published by said organizations from June 2016 to December 2016. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used for the study. We conclude that Facebook Live had an impact on news outlets, particularly those that relied on text and not video.
