The Truth As Told In Lies
"The Truth As Told In Lies” is a narrative short film on depression, abuse, and teenage suicide. The film explores the concepts of situational truth and deception through the retelling of past events through rhythmic montage flashbacks throughout the dialogue. The missing dialogue ties in with the Freudian psychoanalytic framework, and allows the narrative to move forward despite the multiple temporal elements in the timeline. The film also delves into another psychological phenomenon as it allows a glimpse of the rare experience of comatose awareness, represented by the protagonist floating in an endless black space. The subject matter and characters are situated in affluent Filipino society, giving rise to a film that shows a different side of Manila, a side not usually represented in the Filipino film space, yet the character’s material wealth is more subtractive than additive, giving the characters emotional depth and the audience a chance to focus on the raw emotional content instead of needing to particularly place or situate the characters in familiar settings.
