Abstract

ADVINCULA, S. R (2017) TEMBONG (Connecting), Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines Diliman.

Tembong (Connecting) is a narrative about the formation and acceptance of one’s identity. The film will follow a story of a T’boli man going against a cultural norm that speaks of gender roles inorder to search for his own identity. Framed by Althusser’s Ideological State Apparatus (ISA), the belief in the community that he was brought up with causes conflict to the main character. This unwraps the discourse on why the T’nalak cloth was only made available to be weaved by women. The main character would have to bend this belief that was instilled in him as a child which questions the norms of the traditional ideology of the T’boli culture. The film also comments on the preservation of the weaving of T’nalak and understanding the sanctity of its process.
