Abstract

Tan, H.M. (2018). The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous is a study on the spectacle sport of professional wrestling from the female pro-wrestlers’ perspective. It follows the journey of the three most active female members of the Philippine Wrestling Revolution (PWR): Sam and Vernice, the two lone female pro-wrestlers out of the 35-strong PWR roster, as well as Tabbi, an aspiring pro-wrestler from the first-ever PWR all-women’s boot camp, as they all pursue their dream and passion for pro-wrestling, while juggling it with their own personal struggles outside of the ring.

This film shows how pro-wrestling has evolved from a dream to reality as an impactful form of self-expression and an important part of their daily lives; as well as how much hard work, creativity, resilience, and passion it takes for them to pursue it as a career, especially when the odds are against their favor in terms of pro-wrestling’s reputation as a non-serious sport, and the fact that it is a sport highly dominated by males.

Pro-wrestling is commonly perceived to be a masculine sport when in fact, women have been present in it since its early beginnings in travelling circuses. This film aims to break that stereotype, and present a refreshing perspective by putting the spotlight on the female pro-wrestlers for once.
