Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors

UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors

Founded on November 24, 1976, the University of the Philippines Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM) has continuously molded and developed outstanding, competent and well-rounded individuals for 34 years.

UP CIEM was formed to provide academic support to the Industrial Engineering students of the College. However, in addition to promoting academic excellence, the organization has made it its core value to advocate the personal development of the students not merely as Industrial Engineers, but as members of the community. To fulfill its purposes, UP CIEM holds various projects each year such as the college entrance exam review for incoming freshmen, tutorials, outreach programs, and the IESHIKAWA Seminar - an annual event to impart a range of Industrial Engineering topics to other universities.

Despite its growing numbers, UP CIEM remains true to its foundation, providing an organization of support, assistance and relationships to the students. However, more than being an organization, UP CIEM is a family that helps its members to achieve their full potentials and capabilities.

One Circle. One Family. UP CIEM.

UPGRADE – College Entrance Exam Review for High School Students

Facilitated by the Academic Affairs Committee, and the Public Relations and Special Events Committee, UPgrade is the yearly college entrance examination review for high school students conducted during the months June and July. This weekly activity involves reviews in the subjects Mathematics, Science, Language Proficiency and Reading Comprehension with the goal of equipping the fourth year high school students the necessary skills needed to pass any collegiate level entrance examination. Lecturers are members of UP CIEM, who were trained prior to the event. Review materials, which serve as a study guide, are prepared by CIEMers and given to the students. For more than 7 years, UPgrade has handled over 50 students yearly, serving as a stepping stone towards building a better future for the youth.

IESHIKAWA

Now on its sixth year, IESHIKAWA has definitely surpassed expectations in providing future Industrial Engineers a different perspective of their respective course. This one day seminar-workshop event has reached its regional, gathering more than 400 students from colleges and universities all over the Luzon area. IESHIKAWA aims to reinforce and enhance the learnings taught inside the classroom by providing real life examples of applications of taught methods. Different IE fields are also exposed to the students. Furthermore, students are subjected to group workshops in which they can practice leadership and team work.

RONDA PALENGKE

One of the five winners of Colgate-Rock Ed Fresh U Project, Ronda Palengke has emerged from a simple social enterprise project to a technological business enterprise. The aim of the project is to provide the UP Sikatuna Bliss Women’s Community a stable source of income using the grant awarded by Colgate. The initial idea was simply stated in the project itself, the community shall prepare food and sell on carts to different communities. Ronda Palengke has not stopped there. With its passion for innovation, the project is also awarded as one of the ten teams incubated in Ayala Techboot Camp 2010. It has also made ties with Gawad Kalinga and the Department of Science of Technology, who also incubated the project with the UP-DOST Enterprise Incubator.

ANNIVERSARY MONTH

UP CIEM celebrates its anniversary month during November with a lot of activities in store not only for the members but to the community as well. The anniversary month celebration is a form of gratitude to all groups of people who have contributed to the success of UP CIEM for the thirty five years. Annually, CIEMers conduct a Teacher’s Appreciation Day to thank their mentors who guide them in pursuing their fields. Maintenance personnel members of the UP College of Engineering also have their own appreciation day. CIEM extends its gratitude by conducting outreach programs every year to different communities. The celebration is ended by the annual CIEM Anniversary Party attended by current members and alumni as well.

ENGINEERING WEEK

Consistently one of the top five organizations during December’s Engineering Week, UP CIEM takes pride of the talents and skills the members prepare for the festive event. UP CIEM consistently stands out in the different competitions during the event. CIEM Awitan Group (chorale), CIEM Cheering Team, UP COST (drama and theatre group) and Indakan Team (dance troupe) are consistent placers in their respective competitions.
