You may use Obletorr to efficiently distribute huge media files, files (greater than the UVLe limit of 32MB) whose license you yourself own, files that are meant for redistribution (e.g., open source files, creative commons). Here's how:

  • Step 1: Using your favorite bittorrent client, create a .torrent file by
    • selecting a file that you want to share and
    • adding the ff torrent tracker:
    http://obletorr.upd.edu.ph/announce.php

Please write the appropriate description of the file you are sharing.

(If you have no bittorrent client yet, download Transmission or µTorrent.)

  • Step 2: Open the resulting .torrent file, using your torrent client.
  • Step 3: Distribute the resulting .torrent file by doing any or all of the following:
    • sending the resulting .torrent file to people you want to share the source file with (say, your students)
    • uploading the .torrent file to your UVLe course site
    • uploading it to some torrent trackers or indexers out there

Tips

  • For redundancy, you may add the following trackers under Step 1 above:
    udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
    udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
  • For better sharing experience, encourage the people you share your files with to maintain a ratio of at least 1 for each file they got via BitTorrent.
  • If you (or other members of your group) DO NOT post your .torrent file in any publicly accessible sites, the files you're sharing may not be publicly searchable and therefore their distribution or access will be limited only to your group.
  • To share several files and directories all at once, compress or zip the files and directories into one file or put them in one directory and make a .torrent out of it.
  • If you're not submitting the .torrent file to Obletorr, DO NOT include this tracker:
    http://obletorr.upd.edu.ph/announce.php

Use these instead:

    udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
    udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
  • Be patient. In rare times when trackers are busy, it can take up to 6 hours before your peer-to-peer transmission begins. If it's beyond this period and no transmission takes place, you may email uvle@up.edu.ph so DILC staff can help diagnose the problem.
  • If you already have the .torrent file and would want simply to add Obletorr as another tracking service, visit http://www.torrenteditor.com/ to do just that.
