Dypiangco, Carlos Miguel (2019) Ball Is Life: A Frame Analysis on ESPN 5’s Television Coverage of the Philippine Basketball Association Governor’s Cup 2018. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis. University of the Philippines Diliman – College of Mass Communication
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is one of the most followed leagues in the Philippines. Media plays a crucial role in covering its basketball games, specifically through the television channel ESPN 5. Thus, it has reached a huge number of Filipinos from all over the country, turning them into fans of the league. Knowing that media framing has an effect on the audiences of the sport, the contents of selected PBA games were analyzed to understand what constitutes an ideal coverage of basketball. The Framing model of Goffman was used as the theoretical framework for the study. Through this, the researcher found out how certain elements of the coverage can shape the viewer’s experience and interpretation of the game. Through watching the PBA games, the researcher identified key features such as commentator, replay, advertisement, that are present in its coverage. Interviews with the producers, directors and other members of the broadcast team were also done to discover other factors were considered in the coverage of basketball. The researcher found out that ESPN 5 makes use of framing methods to highlight the best parts of a PBA game. In doing so, they are able to develop saleable storylines that attract more viewers and advertisers, which leads to a sustained league.
