Abstract
Coming out as a queer individual is a big issue for the young Filipina who lives in a society that is influenced heavily by family values, religion and patriarchy. This research studies how the recent coming out stories of two young female personalities in media, one local and one foreign—Charice Pempengco and Ellen Page—are received by young women who understand the struggles of coming out. The reception of the stories by ten queer female college students from different universities in Metro Manila were investigated using in-depth semi-structured interviews. As analyzed under the Queer Theory and Cohen’s (2001) theory on Audience Identification, the results of the interviews revealed that the majority of the respondents related to the coming out stories of Pempengco and Page in different ways, but these respondents did not display a deep level of identification with either of the two celebrities.
