Abstract
Cruz, M.T. (2015). Agwat. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
Agwat tells the story of Issa, a college student, who grew up with an emotionally distant father, Rudy, who is a failed businessman. Issa and her mother, who is working abroad, wish for a more privileged life. However, Rudy struggles to provide for his family and all he ever wanted was for them to stay together. After graduation, Issa decides to follow her mother abroad. As she’s about to leave the country, Issa then understands all the sacrifices done by his father for their family.
The film centers on the struggles of a father trying to reconnect with his daughter. Diaspora and globalization are two of the many reasons why families end up broken. At first, they think that going abroad will make their lives much easier but in reality, it’s the other way around. Most of those who live abroad tend to feel melancholic because they can’t lead happy lives in their own homeland.
