Title: (Wo)Men’s Sports: An Analysis of the Role of Gender in the Coverage of the UAAP Season 77 Basketball and Volleyball in the Three Leading Metro Manila Newspapers
Abstract: Bacud, A.J. & Chua, G. (2015). (Wo)Men's Sports: An Analysis of the Role of Gender in the Coverage of the UAAP Season 77 Basketball and Volleyball in the Three Leading Metro Manila Newspapers, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines, College of Mass Communication.
Media played an important role in the boost in popularity of the UAAP in 1991 when the tournament was brought closer to the audience through television. Since then, the UAAP gained more media coverage in both the traditional and new media. However, it appears that there is a gap in the print coverage and the popularity of the men's and women's divisions in basketball and volleyball.
This study looked into the coverage of the UAAP Season 77 Men’s and Women’s divisions in basketball and volleyball in the Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and The Philippine Star to determine if gender bias is existing in the coverage of UAAP sports. The study focused on the news production process of the newsrooms and the content of the sports sections of the three newspapers. The study also looked into the reader’s perception of gender in sport. The quantitative-qualitative research design was then used to formulate recommendations in order to solve the gap in the print coverage of the UAAP men's and women's basketball and volleyball.
