A Study On The Effect Of Local Editions Of Foreign Women’s Magazines Vs Filipino Women’s Magazines On The Readers’ Self-Perception And Behavior
This study examines the similarities and differences between locally made women’s magazines and local editions of foreign women’s magazines as well as their effect on the self-perception of their readers.
The content of select women’s magazines published by MEGA Publishing and Summit Media were analyzed based their magazine covers, the number and nature of their articles and advertisements, and the gender and nationality of their writers and cover models. High school students from exclusive girl schools were surveyed to determine the effect of these magazines on their lifestyle.
Both types of magazines had a mixture of Filipino and Western topics in their content but Mega and Meg magazines featured more Filipino items in their articles while articles in Candy and Preview tended to prioritize Western, specifically Hollywood, personalities and products. However, respondents were unable to distinguish major differences between the two magazine types. Both types were discovered to have a negative effect on the respondents regarding their self-image and had little influence on the respondents’ lifestyle decisions.
