This study identifies and analyzes the framing methods that shape the mediation and transformation of a live sporting event to a televised game. The television coverage of ABS-CBN Sports and Action of the UAAP Season 80 basketball finals series which started on November 25, 2017 and ended on December 3, 2017 is used as the case study.

Following the two-level agenda-setting theoretical model of Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw, the exposure and portrayal framing methods are investigated. Taking into account the content analysis of the game coverage, discourse analysis of key informant interviews, and participant observation, eight frames were found; three exposure framing methods namely the (1) broadcast rights contract, (2) schedule of games, and (3) TV network channels; and five portrayal framing methods namely (4) production environment, (5) storyline, (6) on officiating, (7) advertising, and (8) UAAP and ABS-CBN values.

The eight frames applied in the coverage are dictated by the following sources of agenda: UAAP, ABS-CBN, advertisers, and the audience. Aside from the eight frames, it was also concluded that UAAP and ABS-CBN engage in a symbiotic relationship and that sports production generally requires low level of mediation.
