ABSTRACT
This study looked into how 10 selected male students of Quezon National High School read the dating and courtship practices seen in Got to Believe, a primetime teleserye in ABS-CBN that used a young romance genre.
It aimed to describe how the dating and courtship practices among the youth are portrayed in the said teleserye, and to find out how the young audiences receive them. It also looked into how selected male teenagers date and court the opposite sex nowadays, and how closely these practices are to the practices shown in Got to Believe.
The study used Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding model as its framework. The writers of Got to Believe were interviewed and a textual analysis of the episodes of the said teleserye were done to know how the dating and courtship practices were encoded. A traditional survey was also administered to Quezon National High School’s male students, and personal interviews were conducted with 10 of the respondents to get more detailed background information about their perception of experiences on dating and courtship. This was done to find out the underlying reasons for their reading of the dating and courtship practices shown in Got to Believe.
It was identified that the dating and courtship practices in Got to Believe are semi-traditional and semi-modern. Furthermore, it was found out that the selected male students of Quezon National High School generally accept the dating and courtship practices in Got to Believe because they can relate to them and see those practices in real life. It was also because they see the love team’s characters in Got to Believe as a good example of young lovers.
