Abstract
MORALES, Christine Aira M, (2018). Ultimate Song Machine: A Case Study of ABS-CBN’s Star Music Artist Moira Dela Torre Using The Political Economy Framework. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines Diliman, College of Mass Communication
This study examines the political economy of music in broadcast television and tackles the power relations and integrations of and in the structures involved in music production and in teleserye production. Specifically, this research looks into the commodification, power relations, and synergy in the production, utilization, and distribution of the songs of Star Music artists for ABS-CBN teleseryes. Using case study as a method, this study looks into the specific case of Moira Dela Torre as one of the leading singer-songwriters in the Star Music roster of artists. I investigate and examine the specific internal and external processes and systems that govern the whole production process of her songs used in teleseryes. I also look into how Moira Dela Torre, as an artist, is marketed by ABS-CBN. As with any case study, this research is beyond examination of isolated variables; data is retrieved from analyzing and studying multiple sources of evidence. This study aims to show how ABS-CBN, as a media conglomerate, benefits from the record label Star Music as a means for corporate concentration and further control of the market.
