The Sexual Network: Sexual Negotiation of Men who use the Internet to seek Sex with other Men (MISM)

Abstract It has been known that men are primarily responsible for the transmission of HIV because of their participation in risk-taking activities such as unsafe homosexual and/or heterosexual sex (HIV/AIDS in the Philippines, 2013). This study describes the negotiation patterns of Men who use the Internet to have Sex with other Men (MISM) specifically the factors that come into play in their negotiations, and how they carry out these negotiations with partners in differing situations online. The relationship of variables to the negotiation patterns of the participants—while accounting for their independent dignity, worth, and conscious capacity to develop personal competence and self-respect—was given focus. Results show that MISM use mobile applications and websites to try to arrive at their desired safer/risky sex behavior by including their preference for it online, talking about engaging in it, and deciding to engage in it online. Posting in one’s online profile about intention to use condoms, talking about intention to use condoms online before doing it person, and deciding about using condom online through chatting helps MISM to actually be able to use condoms in real life. The same is true for the other two risky behaviors, Party and Play and Unprotected Anal Intercourse.
