History and Background

The UP Anthropology Society (UP AnthroSoc) is an academic organization, based at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy in University of the Philippines Diliman, that aims to empower students to take part in strengthening the student body in order to seek a more holistic learning opportunity in the field of Anthropology in the university.

At present, it is the only student organization dedicated to expanding anthropological interest within and beyond the academic sphere, and also in engaging students and professional anthropologists in discourse which will help realize the potentials of the discipline. Since it was founded on April 7, 1946, the UP Anthropology Society has continued to keep the field relevant and dynamic by inviting discussions and arranging activities on various social issues using an anthropological lens.

Historically, UP AnthroSoc was noted for its advocacy for indigenous people rights by arranging activities such as campaigning against the construction of the Chico River Dam in the 1980s. In addition, the organization has helped cultivate future anthropologists, some of them currently part of the UP Department of Anthropology faculty and other related disciplines, while others are making their mark in the field of anthropology in the country.

The UP Anthropology Society has continuously upheld a higher learning experience within the four fields of anthropology through its various advocacies, discussions, projects, and activities contributing to societal re-engineering and transformation.
