Title: TV WannaBe, PinoyWannaBe: a case study on Traces of Media Convergence, Participatory Culture and New Media Usage as seen from the PinoyWannaBe Production Experience

Abstract:

This thesis is a case study of Philippine convergence as seen from the PinoyWannaBe production experience. Convergence is a global technological and cultural phenomenon where mere consumers of media have become creators of content, making a participatory culture. Convergence allows content to flow across different platforms and posits collective intelligence as a new source of media power. Even though the Philippines is TV-centric, more Filipinos are going online and creating their own content. This study aims to determine the extent of convergence and its constituent properties in the Philippines. With the use of Axel Bruns’ Produsage Framework and Henry Jenkins’ Convergence Culture, the PinoyWannaBe blog-show was analyzed as a case study of convergence. Using complete participation and ethnographic interviews, this study determined the different procedures involved in content creation and established the different sites of convergence within PinoyWannaBe. Results show that despite the alternative platform in which it is presented, PinoyWannaBe directly adapts television characteristics to its production process and content. Lastly, this thesis discusses the implications of this case study on the Filipino audience, content and mass media.
