ABSTRACT

Santos, R. R. O. (2016) All-for-Juan, Not-for-All: A Textual Analysis of How Eat Bulaga!’s Gender-Themed Shows Negatively Perpetuate Stereotypes of the Bakla and Breed Homophobia. Unpublished Bachelor’s Thesis. University of the Philippines Diliman. Quezon City.

This study examined how media breeds homophobia. Specifically, it inquired how Eat Bulaga! negatively perpetuated stereotypes of the Filipino bakla. Through textual analysis, the researcher aims to identify the stereotypes of the bakla, and how media uses them to perpetuate homophobia.

The researcher utilized non-probability and purposive or judgment sampling as a sampling technique. The samples of this study are the grand finals episodes of Super Sireyna and Suffer Sireyna.

By using B. Gorham’s social psychology of stereotypes and J. Butler’s theory of gender performativity to interpret the results, this study found out that, Eat Bulaga! promotes and constructs stereotypes of the bakla and therefore contributes to the homophobia bred by media through the misrepresentation and abuse of the bakla.
