Whats Wrong With Women, Three: A Study on the Alleged Oppression of Women in Their Representation in Media
ABSTRACT
This study examines the representation of women in radio, television, and cinema. Feminist studies have stated that women have been marginalized or oppressed in how they are represented in media. Although this may be true to some broadcast materials, to say that women have been absolutely marginalized is too hasty a generalization.
As case studies, various television shows, motion pictures, and songs from the 1960s to 1980s are utilized to determine whether or not women are marginalized or oppressed in their representation in media. Through textual analysis, the researcher examines the portrayal of women and their alleged stereotypically demeaning roles, as what feminists claim.
This thesis serves as the third installment to two undergraduate theses that were also submitted to the Broadcast Communication Department in the College of Mass Communication of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. The first thesis, entitled The Trouble With Women: Evaluating the Woman in the Light of the Broadcast Journalism Profession, was written by Katherine S. Reyes in year 2000. Its sequel was The Problem With Women, Too, written by Marvin M. Tomandao in year 2005.
