Seek NU Shall Find: Seeking the Political and Economic Factors Behind the Reformatting of NU107 to 107.5 Win Radio

Calayan, J.A.S. (2015). Seek NU Shall Find: Seeking the Political and Economic Reasons Behind the Reformatting of NU107 to 107.5 Win Radio. (Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis). University of the Philippines, Diliman.

How do political and economic factors reshape programming in radio today? One interesting case to study is the reformatting of NU107. Before 2010, this station was known as the Home of NU Rock. In 2010, it reformatted to become 107.5 Win Radio, which was described as a masa station. This is an in-depth study that identifies the political and economic factors that could have contributed to the reformatting of NU107 to 107.5 Win Radio. It specifically seeks to determine how ratings, revenue, and the management were involved in the change of the station’s format. This study looks at the case using the framework of political economy. It uses the view of Eoin Devereux in applying political economy to media. He believes that when cultural production is driven by the relentless search for profit and media organizations with a wide range of economic interests, media content would be the first casualty if it were to challenge prevailing business interests. To identify the political economic factors that led to the reformatting of NU107 to 107.5 Win Radio, the study employs the use of key informant interviews and document analysis in analyzing the SEC records of the Progressive Broadcasting Corporation and in looking into the ratings of NU107. It also considers articles written about the reformatting.
