Photography Society
The UP Photography Society (UP OPTICS) is a duly recognized university-wide organization of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, committed to the promotion of photography as an art and the establishment of training grounds for the continuous development of its members’ skills. Established eight years ago, it continues to be one of the leading photography organization in the University.
History
It all started one ‘dark’ afternoon (in the dark room) of the 1st semester of AY 2002-2003, when a group of Film 110 students under Prof. Anne Marie de Guzman became attached to the art of black & white photography. One student, Jesus Paolo Tolentino initiated that, after many satisfying moments of taking and printing photographs in the dark room, why shouldn’t the class start a new organization that would serve as an avenue for photography enthusiasts?
In this new organization, they could enhance their skills, yet at the same time, share their talent and enthusiasm with fellow shutterbugs. Six of the fifteen students pursued the plan. Jesus Paolo Tolentino would go on to become the founding president of the UP Photography Society, a.k.a UP OPTICS. After several informal meetings, news spread that this new organization was established, and the roster grew through personal invitation.
On November 20, 2002, they gathered for the first general assembly at the second floor of the Palma Hall lobby. And the rest, as the say, is history!
