This study aimed to assess the function of online media in the coverage of Typhoon Yolanda by four online news websites ABS-CBN News.com., GMA News Online, Inquirer.net and Interkasyon.com by determining the frames used in the published articles following the phases of the disaster management cycleand formulating recommendations for further studies on reporting disasters. The researchers used both quantitative and qualitative approaches in this study. The researchers employed content analysis on the online articles of the selected news websites and conducted interviews with media professionals, experts on weather forecasting and disaster management, and typhoon survivors. The content analysis showed that most news reports published were about casualties, damages caused and relief operations. Majority of the articles published by the online news sites had context which added deeper substance to the reports. Analysis of the pre-disaster reports and interviews with experts and typhoon survivors revealed there was a failure to effectively communicate the concept of storm surge and other technical terms used in the reports. As a result, PAGASA in partnership with Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (Commission to the Filipino Language) came up with “Patnubay sa Weder Forkast” (Guide on Weather Forecast), a glossary of meteorological terms in Filipino to help more people understand weather forecasts more easily.
