ABSTRACT

Mampusti, A.A. and A.C. Maningo (2011). Mass Comm Tweeters: An Exploratory Study on U.P. Mass Communication Students' Usage of Social Media as a Medium for Citizen Journalism during the 2010 Presidential Elections, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

This study explores how 100 mass communication students from the University of the Philippines, Diliman view Twitter.com‘s role in the coverage of the 2010 national elections. Using surveys on the level of the participation in social media and content analysis of twitter posts, the authors found that the respondents turned to Twitter.com and the social media for election updates. With social media‘s accessibility and speed, ordinary citizens without prior journalism training were able to tweet, retweet and read tweets regarding the elections especially the results. Since the author was limited to analyzing tweets with available URL online, they believe that social media posts should be properly archived and documented to be fully utilized as a reliable news source and subject of future studies.
