ABSTRACT

Guzman, P. A. (2016). Ka(sala)nang Balita: An Analysis of TV Patrol’s Reportage and Gatekeeping Process on Social Movements, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

This study examines TV Patrol’s news coverage of protests and activism by looking into the quality, quantity, and reportage of news during the six (6) annual People’s SONA from 2010 to 2015 throughout the Aquino administration. It also analyzes how the gatekeepers control the news coverage of social movements by studying the mode of regulation, methods, and motivations in filtering and shaping the material. In this study, social movements shall refer to protests, rallies, and demonstrations, particularly the People’s SONA or SONA ng Bayan. Through a comprehensive analysis of TV Patrol episodes aired the evening of the People’s SONA, followed by interviews of reporters and various management personnel, the researcher arrived at a thorough description of how TV Patrol presents news on protests. A conclusion was made that reveals violence, not the message of the protesters, as the focus of the coverage.
