Abstract

This study looks into the portrayal of Filipino women in the reality television show, Asia’s Next Top Model (AsNTM). There have already been several studies on how women representation in the media, but most of them were broadcast through advertisements and teleseryes. Hence this case is different, as AsNTM is categorized under the reality television genre. It sought to derive the image and perception tied to the Filipina community as the show run through its whole course.
To achieve these goals, the study employed a content analysis with the use of Goffman’s framing theory. It attempted to analyze selected frames of the series that show the depiction of Filipinas. By deconstructing each frame, the researcher was able to decode elements that comprised the definition of a Filipina as presented by the media to its audience. This research is also anchored on previous studies on Filipina representation in media as well as other literature on the industry of beauty and fashion, and the field of psychology. The research has proven that Filipinas face diversity in their physical qualities and verbal attributes, but are similar when it comes to body language and their values. The results of this study will furthermore contribute to the continuous progression of women’s studies and establish a rapport between the media and fashion industry.
