UPCFA Ceramic Studio Summer Extension Programs
Pottery and Clay Sculpture Workshop for Ages 7 to 14 years old

The workshop is open to participants’ ages 7 to 14 years old. It teaches basic hand-building techniques in making clay forms and for the older participants (11-14 years old) an option to work on the pottery wheel to form simple vessels for one of the projects. The clay used in the workshop is a local stoneware clay that was developed by and processed only at the UP College of Fine Arts (UPCFA) Ceramic Studio. The glazes are all food grade and thus the fired clay or ceramic forms may be used to store, to cook and to serve food.

In addition, students will be introduced to the wider potential of altering, decorating and manipulating the surface of the clay using varying techniques. Students will also learn an overview of the ceramic process as they see their works transform at different stages: green ware, leather hard work, bone dry work, bisque fired work, glazed work and glaze-fired work. The works of the students will be fired using the electric kiln to reach bisque fired temperature (10000C) and at the wood-fired kiln to reach glaze temperature (12800C).

The method of instruction is individualized as the teachers are trained to know the characteristics of child art at each stage of development and thus are able to identify their student’s stage and can prescribe the appropriate approach and level of instruction. Below is our curriculum:
