A little birdie told me: Twitter as the new news medium based on a survey of 150 college students

ABSTRACT

This study, with its goal of exploring the effectiveness of the micro-blogging service Twitter in raising news consciousness among Metro Manila college students, was able to effectively gauge the news awareness and media usage of 150 college students from the Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines, and University of Sto.Tomas, through a survey. The general culture of Twitter usage among the youth, which is based on proximity and personal interests, was also explored through focus interviews of six informants. Additionally an independent observation of five Twitter news sites showed that the online counterparts of television news sites ranked higher than the online counterpart of a print news site, perhaps supporting the claim of television’s ubiquity over print even in the online arena. These findings show the changing usage of media by the youth based on various factors and the possible supplementation of new media to the existing usage of traditional media in delivering news.
