Abstract

Children are one of the most important assets of the nation under the Child and Youth Welfare Code of the Philippines. They are often depicted in documentaries of Reel Time, a weekly documentary television program of GMA 7. This study provides a descriptive analysis of the portrayals of children in four selected Reel Time documentaries, namely Batang Maestro, Isang Paa sa Hukay, Isinulat sa Tubig, and Samad. The study uses semiotic reading in describing each documentary’s images of children and in analyzing how the production value in the documentaries affected their portrayals of children. This study also aims to provide the implications of these portrayals of children to their rights, especially their right to education, under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
