ABSTRACT

This study believes that each television show or program speaks of a voice of the community and the culture from which it emanates. Thus, it delves into the study of representations, particularly of the Philippine criminal justice system in a television serial. The criminal justice system is the instrument by which the government controls and regulates crime. In the Philippines, the criminal justice system has five interdependent pillars: law enforcement, prosecution, courts, jail system, and the community. This study focuses on the representations of the Philippine criminal justice system in Dahil May Isang Ikaw, a television serial. It also aims to answer how the television serial portrays the environment in relation to the representations of the criminal justice system and examine how the culture industry perspective rests beneath such representations. Overall, this study provides information about the criminal justice system, reads the implications of its representations, and scrutinizes the link of the culture industry with the representations, with a goal to inform and stir up the curiosity of its readers to question how, why, and what possibilities are present with the existence of such representations.
