Read Between the Lines: An Analysis of the Culture of the Online Satire Readers in the Philippines


Abstract:

The study aims to define the market composition of online satirical news articles in the Philippines. Furthermore, it wants to find out its effect to the perception and/or behavior of its readers towards the issues discussed in the articles. In addition, it pursues to determine the reason why people misunderstand the meaning of the online satirical news articles in the Philippines.

To answer the queries of this study, the researcher conducted an online survey among the followers of Professional Heckler and Adobo Chronicles. In total, the survey got 40 responses. From the data gathered, it was found out that these online satirical articles serve a niche market including those who are members of the youth age bracket and people who have attained a certain level of formal education. 

The study also revealed that the readers of online satirical articles tend to grow an interest on the issues discussed. On the other hand, the study determined that the common reason people misunderstand the intentions of online satirists is that the authors and readers have a difference in their level of knowledge about the issue and type of environment they live in.
