Dimteng Ti Lawag
ABSTRACT
Magsaysay, D.M. (2018). Dimteng Ti Lawag, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
Dimteng Ti Lawag follows the story of Althea, a 6-year-old girl and her mother Susan as they cope with the sudden loss of the father, Ramon, a local fisherman. Althea, being very close to her father, can’t fully grasp the concept of death or a disappearance and believes that her father sailed off into the sun.
Grounded on the concepts of Grief and Loss, the film aims to explore the process of Mourning, especially within families whose breadwinner has a high-risk occupation (e.g. fishing), following J.W. Worden’s belief that healing requires active participation (“tasks”) from the bereaved individual. The film uses the narrative style of Magic Realism to portray the point of view of a child going through the mourning process.
