This study seeks to provide a critical discussion that analyzes the hegemonic function which the news media serve. It looks into the extramedia and ideological influences that affect media content. It focuses on the news that involved Filipino broadcasters Ces Drilon and Ted Failon, that were produced by the two leading television networks in the country– ABS-CBN and GMA.

It primarily identifies, examines and discusses the macro influences using hegemonic perspectives by Antonio Gramsci and Todd Gitlin. The hegemonic assertions of Gramsci and Gitlin compel me to understand the ideologies of the dominant class which the news media constantly reinforce and legitimize in subtle ways. I hold true that these ideologies need to be “continually renewed, recreated and defended” (Williams in Gitlin 1980: 257) to sustain the dominance of the ruling class.

In laying down the study, it first looks into the frames used by each of the flagship news programs of the media covered by the study – ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol World and GMA’s 24 Oras. The study finds out that the news sources are the extramedia influences that primarily affect the content of the news. The comparative analysis resulted into the point that the news organizations frame their content in the way that will promote certain ideologies. Hence, the discussion is brought to a deeper level of analysis in which the news sources identified belong to the dominant class and, thus, provide information to inject their own set of ideologies.

This study affirms that the dominant institutions rely on news media as they are effective in propagating ideologies. News media are also believed capable of demoting ideologies and they do so if their credibility, which is a hegemonic requirement, is threatened.
