Title
Prevalence and Correlates of Depression and Anxiety Among Campus Journalists in UP Diliman: Pathways for Intervention
Abstract (English)
This paper looks into the depression and anxiety levels of campus journalists at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman), analyzes the factors resulting in these levels, and determines possible pathways for mental health intervention. Anchored on the Social Ecological Model of Health, we employed a mixed method of surveying undergraduate campus journalists from publications inside UP Diliman using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale—Pilipino (HADS-P) and interviewing five respondents with the highest HADS-P scores. Our results showed high levels of depression and anxiety among the respondents. The political situation is a significant factor at these levels, as most respondents said they feel afraid of being campus journalists. This study emphasizes the need to institutionalize mental health services in UP Diliman, establish healthy and safe working environments for campus journalists, and support campus publications.
