Origins of Industrial Relation

Industrial relations (IR)

- is about the employee-employer relationship (EER) and can cover anything that happens within the workplace. Also known as employee relations. According to Bruce Kaufman, IR was born in the 1920’s in the United States of America and has roots in three distinct revolutions – industrial, democratic, and capitalist.

The Labor Problem

– a singular problem that is of most significance during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s which basically boils down to wage, how much should one earn amidst the development of technology (i.e. industrial revolution) and the desire of employers to lower their costs of which wage is the most malleable. Reaching their limit, the workers took matters into their own hands, forming unions and organizing strikes.
