Joel F. Ariate Jr.
Joel F. Ariate Jr. is a university researcher at the Third World Studies Center, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman with responsibilities for research and publications. He is the managing editor of the journal Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies. Currently, he has written or done research, or both, on the history of the death penalty in the Philippines, state-civil society relations in the context of globalization, global civil society movement on debt relief in the Philippines, religious forces and bossism, the sustainability of Philippine-Japan fair trade relations, and on memories of massacres and mass mobilizations. Of late, he has been working on countering pro-authoritarian propaganda and on a history of the mass transit systems in Metro Manila (with emphasis on its political economy). He studied history at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
