This study analyzes the narratives of computer game-themed anime and how they reflect real-life stories of gamers and gaming in general. Using textual analysis and viewed through Fisher's Narrative Paradigm Theory, the research dissected the storyline and characterization of anime series Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, identifying parallels between the narratives of the series' characters and real-life gamers, as well as values highlighted by the series. Analysis included identifying projections of females that either propagated or challenged stereotypes on females and female gamers. Upon analysis, the narratives of the anime series reflect both the mechanics of real-life MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games) as well as real-life struggles of gamers with discrimination and insecurity. Values upheld by the series include love, friendship, community, society, and humanity. Projections of females challenged stereotypes by presenting powerful female characters but also propagated stereotypes by feminizing them through the main male character. The anime storylines reflect how players in a game-world, like in real life, also experience love and loss, function in a community, and have goals. The series also propagate the idea of treating others humanely, both within a game and in real life.
