2nd Indie-Siyensya Film-Making Competition: A Portrait of a Filipino as a Scientist

  • The competition is open to all interested students, young film-makers, scientists and researchers in the country;
  • It has two categories: (a) Youth Category - for highschool and tertiary students, and out-of-school youth, aged 15-20 years old; (2) Science and Technology Professionals Category - for scientists, engineers and researchers;
  • Those interested to join the competition should submit, on or before August 30,2017, an accomplished Entry Form, which includes a description of the film to be produced as entry;
  • The entry should be based on scientific facts related to the theme - “A Portrait of a Filipino as a Scientist” highlighting the life and contributions of (a) Filipino scientist(s) to science and technology and development;
  • The entry may be in the form of a documentary or animation;
  • Entry forms are available at the DOST SEI website: www.sei.dost.gov.ph. Accomplished entry forms may be submitted by email to indiesiyensya@gmail.com or thru dropbox link: : https://tinyurl.com/y8omoeu5;
  • The Board of Judges will conduct an evaluation of the film concept described in the accomplished Entry Form to select those who are eligible to join the final round of the competition;
  • Those selected for the final round are required to attend a one-day Training-Workshop on Film-making to be held on September 18, 2017. The organizers will shoulder ONLY the training and meal expenses of all the participants during the said Training-Workshop . Transportation and other expenses should be borne by the participants, their schools, or sponsors.
  • After the TrainingWorkshop, participants/contestants will be given two (2) months to produce their film entry
  • Entries should be in English, in Filipino, or in any regional language with corresponding English subtitle.
  • Original sound track should be used in the entry. Commercial music/soundtrack may be allowed upon submission of proof that the film-makers were given permission by the copyright owner.
  • The total running time per film entry should be no longer than ten (10) minutes including opening and closing billboards.
  • Entries should be submitted in DVD (if to be sent by courier to the address below), or using any of the following formats:AVI, MP4, MOV, FLV (if to be sent through the dropbox link specified below);
  • Entries may be sent by courier to DOST SEI at: 1st flr Philippine Science Heritage Building, DOST Compound, Bicutan Taguig City, or via dropbox at: https://tinyurl.com/y8omoeu5 on or before October 30, 2017;
  • The organizers and judges reserve the right to reject entries deemed to contain obscenity, nudity, and violence.
  • Entries for the competition will be posted in Youtube for screening. A Viewer’s Choice Special Award will be given to the entry with the most number of Youtube Likes.
  • The right to the reproduction and distribution of the entry shall remain with the respective film-makers.
  • The winning entries will be selected based on the following criteria:
    • Scientific Content (scientific concept and relevance to the theme) - 50%
    • Execution of Idea (how the concept was conveyed / communicated to the audience) - 30%
    • Film Techniques (cinematography, soundtrack, editing, use of special effects) - 20%
  • The best entry to each of the categories will be awarded with a Certificate of Recognition and a Cash Prize:
    • Indie-Siyensya Best Entry (Student Category) - Php 100,000.00
    • Indie-Siyensya Best Entry (Scientist Category) - Php 100,000.00
    • Viewers’ Choice Award - Php 10,000.00
