While HIV prevalence has been decreasing in a global scale, the Philippines was one of nine countries in 2012 in which new HIV cases rose by 25%. As such, the government, mainly through the Department of Health, has been actively advocating greater awareness about HIV/AIDS to arm the public with scientific information that could help curb the spread of the disease. In light of this, journalists who have access to the platforms of mainstream media are the ones in perfect position to help take the information dissemination efforts to the next level. This study looks at how news feature documentary episodes of Emergency, Worldview, Reporter’s Notebook, Investigative Documentaries, Frontrow, The Correspondents, Patrol ng Pilipino and Numero from 2009-2016 portrayed the people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) while bearing in mind that news documentaries must uphold the journalistic standards of fairness, humaneness, and accuracy. In studying the portrayal of the issue of PLWHA, the researchers looked into the production process of news documentaries by interviewing key members of the production team of every documentary show included in this study. The researchers also complemented the findings from the interviews by doing a textual analysis of the news documentaries to identify the frames used in the news documentary episodes to portray the PLWHA.
