Fine Guitar Music and Poetry Concert at UP Music

The UP College of Music presents MÚSICA Y POESÍA: An Evening of Fine Guitar Music and Poetry at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 23 at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium, UP College of Music. The concert is part of its on-going faculty concert season for academic year 2014-2015.

Spearheaded by the Strings and Chamber Music Department of the UP College of Music in Diliman, the featured artists in this concert are guitarist Lester Demetillo, guest narrator Patricia Silvestre, and pianist Geraldine Gonzales.

According to Mr. Demetillo, he “loves to work with poetry a lot” and he is constantly amazed on how words and thoughts can be put together beautifully. When he was young, he used to hear his father, Ricaredo Demetillo, one of the finest Filipino poets and a former faculty in UP Diliman, sharing and reading poems with his colleagues and his family.

To be premiered in this concert are two concertos for guitar and piano, the first movement of El Alevin by Eduardo Angulo (1954- ) and Concerti Métis by Roland Dyens (1955- ), and a few excerpts of Platero Y Yo, a collection of compositions for narrator and guitar, by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968).

Mr. Demetillo, one of the Philippines’ leading classical guitar performers and teachers, has been teaching at the UP College of Music since 1980 and at the Asian Institute for Liturgical Music. He has given master classes, serves as an examiner for different schools, and has performed in various parts of the world. In the Philippines, he averaged 50 concerts a year.

Ms. Silvestre has degrees in Musicology (BM, cum laude) and Spanish (M.A.) from the from UP Diliman. She also obtained a Diploma de Esapñol como Lengua Extranjera from the Univesity of Salamanca, Spain. She is currently working on her PhD in Philippine Studies.

Ms. Gonzales obtained her Bachelor of Music degree Major in Piano (magna cum laude) under Prof. Augusto Espino from the UP College of Music. She completed her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance also from UP under internationally multi-awarded Filipino concert pianist Prof. Jovianney Emmanuel Cruz. At present, she is an Assistant Professor of piano at the same college where she graduated.
