Bagano, J.R.A. (2014). ‘Black and White or Green’: The SM City Baguio Expansion Controversy and Baguio’s Community Press. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines, Diliman.
This undergraduate thesis looks at five newspapers of Baguio City’s community press and how each newspaper treated the SM City Baguio expansion controversy of 2012. SM City Baguio, the biggest mall in the city, declared its plans of expansion in December 2011. When the plan was finalized, the public found out that 182 pine and alnus trees were going to be earthballed in the process. This caused uproar from concerned environmentalists and citizens. Newspapers were active forces in disseminating information while shaping public opinion. Each of the broadsheets studied, including the single daily, professed to certain biases that influenced their news coverage and publication.
